Vivi Release Channels - FAQ

Vivi Release Channels - FAQ

What is a release channel?

A release channel is a method of delivering updates to different groups of users. Each channel has a specific purpose:

  • General Availability (GA): Stable releases with bug fixes.

  • Preview: Early access to new or upcoming features.

2. Do I need to choose a channel?

No action is required. By default, all customers remain on GA Releases for maximum stability and consistency.

Preview releases can be downloaded manually from the Preview Downloads page at any time.

3. How do version numbers work?

Vivi follows Semantic Versioning (2.0.0), using the format: MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH

  • MAJOR — Will remain 3 for the foreseeable future.

  • MINOR — Increases with each release series.

    • Even numbers = GA Releases (e.g., 3.10, 3.12, 3.14…)

    • Odd numbers = Preview Releases (e.g., 3.11, 3.13, 3.15…)

  • PATCH — Incremented for small updates.

    • GA: primarily bug fixes

    • Preview: mix of new features + bug fixes

4. What updates will I receive in GA Releases?

GA Releases include only bug fixes and performance improvements—e.g., 3.10.2 → 3.10.3.
No new features will be added to a GA series until they are fully tested in Preview.

When new features become ready for GA, they will be introduced in the next GA series (e.g., 3.12.0, 3.12.1).

5. When should I upgrade to stay current with GA Releases?

GA patch releases are optional unless they address significant issues (security or core functionality).
Once your organisation is on the latest GA series, upgrading is only needed to apply specific bug fixes.

The first version of a new GA series (e.g., 3.12.0) will be marked as recommended to ensure customers receive the latest stable features.

6. What update notifications will I receive?

GA patch updates are usually marked optional.
Vivi Central will only flag firmware as out-of-date when:

  • A new recommended release is available (e.g., a security fix), or

  • A new GA series is released (e.g., 3.10 → 3.12)

The Vivi App will continue notifying users of new versions that match their chosen channel (GA → GA).

7. What’s included in the Preview Releases?

Preview Releases contain new features, enhancements, and experimental changes.
They provide early visibility into upcoming functionality and allow customers to give feedback before features reach GA.

8. Where can I download Preview Releases?

Preview Releases can be downloaded from the Preview Downloads page.
Initially, Preview firmware will not be available through Cloud Firmware Updates—this will be added in the future.

9. Which platforms support Preview Releases?

Preview Releases are currently available for:

  • Vivi Devices: 100 and 200 series

  • Vivi Apps: Mac and Windows

They are not yet available for iOS, Android, ChromeOS, or Web, but these will be supported later.

10. Can I switch between GA and Preview Releases?

Yes. You can switch at any time by downloading and installing the alternative version from the Downloads page.

11. Can I mix GA and Preview Releases in my organisation?

Yes. Many customers use Preview Releases on a small number of devices for evaluation and testing.

Please report any inconsistencies or issues so we can address them promptly.

12. Is the Preview channel less stable?

Preview releases may include minor bugs or incomplete features, but they are safe to use.
They are ideal for customers who want early access, are testing new functionality, or are preparing for demos.

13. How do I provide feedback on Preview features?

Each Preview Release will include links and contact options for providing feedback.
Your input directly helps refine the final GA version.

14. Will this impact my current setup or integrations?

No. GA Releases will continue to fully support all current integrations and workflows.
Preview features are optional and will not interfere with your existing setup.
