5. Live Captions

Note: Vivi's Live Captions requires an additional subscription. Please speak to your IT Administrator to gain access to the feature.

Vivi's Live Captions feature delivers real-time captions and translation across classroom displays and student devices. Captions support accessibility and comprehension, while live translation helps multilingual learners follow along in their preferred language.

 To launch, select Live Captions from the Vivi app homepage.

Captions

Upon launching, a captions sessions will automatically begin. A transcript will appear in the right-hand side of the Vivi app.

On the classroom display, if no one is sharing, the transcript will be shown.

If someone is sharing, closed captions will be shown in the lower part of the classroom display.

On the left-hand side of the Vivi app, the following options are available:

  • Live Captions/Translation: Choose between Live Captions or Translation. See below for more information on a Translation session.

  • Microphone Dropdown: Select a different microphone. This can include a microphone that is connected via USB to your computer or to the Vivi box.

  • Classroom Display: Toggle on or off the captions appearing on the classroom display.

  • Students: Toggle on or off the captions appearing in student apps (see below for more information).

  • Censor Profanity: Toggle on or off if any profanity is censored within the captions.

  • Font Size: Select how large the captions will appear on the classroom display.

  • Pause: Pause the captions from being shown.

  • Export: Download the transcription of the session as either a PDF or a DOCX (Word Document).

To end a Captions session, select Stop All in the upper right.

Translation

Alongside Live Captions, Vivi is able to translate audio from English into 75 different languages. To begin translating, after selecting Live Captions from the room's main page, select Translation.

Use the drop down at the top to select the language to be shown on the classroom display.

Similar to Captions, the translations will be shown on the classroom display either as a transcript (along with the original English) if no one is sharing or as closed captions if someone is sharing.

To end a Translation session, select Stop All in the upper right.

When a captions or translation session is ended, the transcript is deleted. If you want to keep the transcript, ensure you click on Export before ending the session.

Students

When the Students toggle is selected in the teacher's app, students are able to access either the Captions or Translations in their Vivi app. This could be useful if there is a small number of students who require captions or translations, or if there are multiple translation languages required.

Students can access the Captions or Translations by selecting Live Captions in the Vivi app.

If a Captions session is running, students will see the transcript of the captions in their app.

If a Translation session is running, the students will see the transcript of the lesson in both English and in their chosen language. They can use the drop down at the top to select a different language.

With Vivi's Translation tool, students can be looking at different translations on their own device. If you have students who speak a wide variety of languages, they can all be reading the translations in their own language.
